As part of Cameron Mackintosh’s revival of his London theatres, the Novello theatre (formerly Strand theatre), an intricate Sprague design built in 1906, has been completely refurbished in period style by Arts Team. The building exterior has been cleaned, newly designed illuminated signage added and the original canopy over the entrance has been restored and painted. The entrance foyer marble has been revived and decorative plaster ceiling features highlighted in creams and golds. Newly designed lighting complements the existing throughout the front of house. Circulation spaces have been opened up to provide better access to all levels. The stalls and upper circle bars have been enlarged and refurnished in period style. Extra facilities have been provided and original features retained.The auditorium plasterwork has been enhanced, mouldings added to walls, and the dome painting restored. The newly formed tiered, decorative plaster ceilings hide a new ventilation system that will provide comfort cooling to theauditorium. Bespoke seating has been installed and tiering remodelled at balcony and dress circle to enhance sightlines. All soft furnishings and finishes are new. Ivor Novello’s top fl oor apartment above the public spaces has remained intact.
