HKIA Midfield Concourse crowns Grand Prize at Green Building Award 2016

With more than 35 green features, the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Midfield Concourse won the Grand Award for New Buildings: Completed Projects – Institutional Building at Green Building Award 2016.

The five-level concourse, designed by Global Board Director Max Connop and Director Albert Tong, adopts an environmentally responsive building form, with its roof shape and glazed facades optimised based on the building’s orientation. The roof has an asymmetrical cross section with a deep protective overhang to the west to minimise solar heat gain. As the concourse’s axis is offset from true north and south, the aspect of the skylights sits at a skew to the main orientation of the roof, facing north to maximise natural lighting. Other green features include low-energy lighting systems, high performance glazing panels, solar shading and north-facing skylights maximise natural lighting while reducing solar heat gain and saving on air-conditioning. More than 1,200 square metres of solar panels are also installed on the roof to harness renewable energy. Building up to full operations with 230 flights per day, the concourse can handle an additional 10 million passengers a year.

Aedas is the Lead Design Architect, working with Lead Consultant and Engineers Mott Macdonald and Arup Joint Venture and Aviation Planner OTC.

The biennale Green Building Award is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and Professional Green Building Council, aiming to recognise buildings with outstanding performance in sustainability and the built environment. The programme covers projects in the Asia Pacific region.
