Cladding by orientation

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Aedas London based Advanced Modelling Group developed the cladding approach for this competition entry in Abu Dhabi for a mixed-used tower complex.

Taking into account the extreme solar radiation and sky illuminance, the team worked with Arup to develop the required opacity levels for each façade element depending on orientation, tilt and overshadowing. In collaboration with Computational Design Research, the AMG used a generative subdivision script to reduce the percentage opacity on each façade in response to solar exposure.

The pattern developed using Bentley’s GenerativeComponents varies the shading and aperture size to create a distinct character for the building while maintaining optimal daylighting levels and minimising solar gain.
