The Company has carried out refurbishment of Gallery 9, Gallery 28 (Octagon Gallery) and South Duveen Gallery.
The renovation of the South Duveen Gallery, the principal sculpture gallery, included removal of wall linings to expose the original stonework, which was cleaned and repaired, together with the glazed and plaster vaulted ceiling and terrazzo floor. A new lighting system was installed with concealed lighting above the main cornice. Banks of sun control louvres, with an access gallery for cleaning and maintenance, were installed in the roof void. Gallery 9 is the largest single gallery at the Tate.
A new ventilated lead roof was laid on boarding and battens on top of the existing asphalt roof. The patent glazing was renewed and external sun control blinds installed. Internally the elaborate plaster vaulted ceiling and cornice was restored and redecorated, walls were covered with plywood sheathing and decorated with fabric. and the marble floor was repaired and restored.
The lighting installation was redesigned and renewed. Provision of ornamental railings and gates, together with stone piers and associated ancillary works to extend the existing railings along the whole length of the Millbank Frontage, completed this package.
