Canon Sharples CE Primary
Wigan, UK
Canon Sharples Church of England Primary School and Nursery was completed in December 2004 at a cost of £3.1m and provides 350 primary and 45 nursery places.
The building is located on reclaimed land, once contaminated by waste from an open cast mine; the site has now been transformed and acts as a gateway to the valley and river beyond.
Sitting low within the landscape, this single storey school has little impact on its natural surroundings, while taking full advantage of its setting by offering every classroom excellent views and a high degree of natural light.
Daylight is an important factor in the design and is allowed to penetrate the building through carefully orientated high level glazing running the whole length of the school on all three teaching wings as well as the internal ‘street’.
