The Centres of Central
Hong Kong
Aedas is Master Planner, Retail Design Archtiect & Authorized Person upon the architecture of The Landmark whilst KPF is Concept Design Architect upon the elevations along Queen's Road and of the York House Office Tower.
The considered and integrated urban design of Central, Hong Kong is illustrated through the relationship of three projects completed between 2001 and 2005. These are Chater House, Alexandra House and The Landmark.
These projects vary in scope; from refurbishment to new-build, in scale; from podium refurbishment to complete tower, and in facilitation; where Chater House was completely closed during reconstruction, while The Landmark was fully operational through the redevelopment and completed in phases. However all three projects share a common connection, both physically and in terms of design. They are interlinked through the renovation of footbridges and combine in an Urban Design strategy to enhance the day-to–day lives of those who work in, visit or simply pass through Central.
Approach to urban design is the creation of a framework through building projects, onto which other participants can add their own pieces of the composition. This frame is multi-facetted allowing the incorporation of shop facades and street furniture, light and activity, protection and enclosure. Aedas & KPF as joint design architects provide atria and entrances, arcades and escalators. Others provide shop windows illumination and excitement.
